Our honours projects are distinguished by their academic rigour, challenging field work and by their collaborative partnerships with natural resource management organisations.
Secondary salinisation, which has been largely attributed to land clearing, is particularly acute in Western Australia.
Despite the fact that salinisation is recognised as one of Australia’s greatest water resource management problems, our knowledge on the ecological implications of this phenomenon on stream biota is poor, and in Western Australia, is limited to very few studies.
This project will resample some of the sites used in a study conducted 20 years ago in the Blackwood River to investigate the presence of any trends in the biological response to increasing salinisation. The project will involve the measurement of salinity levels, the collection, identification and counting of macroinvertebrates and fish, and analysis of distribution patterns using appropriate statistics.
